Mission-Critical Database Modernization: ~50 TB Oracle 19c to Amazon Aurora MySQL

How BeyondX helped modernize a large-scale, mission-critical database environment through careful schema transformation, cloud migration engineering, application collaboration, performance optimization, and production-readiness planning.

The Challenge

Modernizing a mission-critical database platform at this scale required far more than transferring data from one engine to another. The environment included approximately 50 TB of Oracle 19c data, complex database structures, large-object workloads, application dependencies, and transaction patterns that had to be carefully evaluated for Amazon Aurora MySQL. The objective was to modernize the platform while preserving application functionality, maintaining data integrity, addressing performance and concurrency requirements, and establishing a production-ready migration and contingency strategy.

Modernization Approach

BeyondX approached the initiative as a database modernization program rather than a simple lift-and-shift migration. The solution combined schema transformation, large-scale data movement, LOB engineering, transaction optimization, and close application-team collaboration to prepare the target environment for production.

Engineering the Modernization

Complex Data Model Modernization — Restructured and optimized complex Oracle database objects and data models for Aurora MySQL.

Large-Scale Migration & Contingency — Engineered AWS DMS migration workflows for approximately 50 TB of data, supported by a controlled fallback and contingency strategy.

LOB Engineering — Addressed large-object migration challenges through optimized configuration, validation, and rollback-readiness planning.

OLTP & Concurrency Optimization — Aligned transaction-isolation and application behavior to address deadlocks and improve transactional performance.

Application Collaboration — Worked closely with application teams to convert and validate tables, indexes, keys, triggers, sequences, and other database dependencies.

Migration at Scale

Approximately 50 TB Modernized

The initiative involved modernizing and migrating approximately 50 TB of Oracle 19c data while maintaining consistency across a complex application environment. BeyondX engineered the migration around controlled data movement, validation, contingency planning, and production cutover readiness.

AWS DMS Migration Engineering

AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) was used as part of the large-scale migration architecture. Migration workflows were engineered to support high-volume data movement while providing operational visibility and a controlled fallback strategy.

Production Cutover & Contingency

Cutover planning incorporated validation checkpoints, application coordination, migration sequencing, and contingency procedures designed to reduce production risk and support a controlled transition to Amazon Aurora MySQL.

Performance & Production Readiness

OLTP Performance & Concurrency — The target environment required careful alignment of transaction behavior with Amazon Aurora MySQL. BeyondX addressed concurrency challenges through transaction-isolation analysis, application coordination, and targeted optimization designed to reduce deadlocks and improve OLTP performance.

Application Validation — Database modernization was coordinated closely with application teams to validate converted objects, dependencies, queries, and transaction behavior. This helped ensure that database changes remained aligned with application functionality throughout the transition.

Production Readiness — Production readiness extended beyond successful data migration. The initiative incorporated migration validation, operational checks, contingency planning, and application-level verification to validate production readiness of the target Aurora MySQL environment.
